Employment Opportunities in Canada

The public can access a report on wages, employment hours, work hours, and job openings for May 2022, enabled by Canada’s monthly payroll figures.

According to the findings of the study, for the first time since May 2021, fewer workers in Canada are receiving cash or perks from their employers.

As of May last year, 26,000 positions were not in the payroll system, as per the survey that was compiled from data taken from the Survey of Payrolls, Employment, and Hours.

The largest declines were observed in Manitoba and Ontario, which had 2500 and 30,000 job openings, respectively. The only province that saw an increase, British Columbia, saw an increase in the number of payroll workers.

Payroll staff reductions are common in all industries.

Recent economic data revealed that the service industry, including jobs in areas such as healthcare, education, and social assistance, saw some of the largest declines. According to reports, this resulted in the loss of about 17,000 payroll workers.

Additionally, employment in the construction industry, in general, fell by a significant amount. Nearly 17,500 fewer people had jobs in May, which was the lowest since July in 2021.

About two-thirds of the construction jobs lost were lost in Ontario. The majority of this loss is due to strike action across Ontario, which caused significant delays to many projects.

The number of jobs in retail is still higher than in 2021. The majority of jobs related to the retail industry, which was the most popular in the country, have been lost in Ontario.

The number of employees working in the retail trade payroll has declined for the second straight month. However, the total number of employees employed in the retail industry is now higher by 6% than in May 2021.

Labrador, British Columbia, Newfoundland, New Brunswick, and Quebec all saw an increase in jobs at retail. However, Ontario did not.

The scientific, professional, and technological services industry was the sole one to see an increase in every province.

This sector added more than 10,000 jobs across the country. The majority of these jobs are in high-tech fields such as computer system design and associated services.

On average, Weekly Salaries are rising by 2.5 percent.

Despite the overall decrease in employment, the retail trade sector saw the highest increase in weekly wages for May, which was an increase of 9.3 percent rise over a similar period in 2021. Pay for technical, scientific, and professional services has increased by 8.1 percent.

However, the entertainment, arts, and recreation industry saw a 9.7 percent decrease in average weekly wages.

The median weekly salary of workers increased by 2.5 percent in comparison to April’s figures. This is usually the result of higher salaries or workplace changes. The results of the study show that the higher average – which was determined to be 1.5 percent higher than before COVID-19–wasn’t due to the more hours worked.

These figures also illustrate the annual growth rate overall. If you compare May 2021 to May 2020, New Brunswick experienced the most significant increase, 7.4%.

Newfoundland and Labrador came in second place with Newfoundland, and Labrador was second with a 5.9 percent increase in its annual income. In addition, the average income was up in seven other Canadian provinces every year.

The number of unfilled Positions in the field of healthcare is Increasing.

The rate of unemployment in Canada dropped further to 4.9 percent in June after hitting an all-time low of 5.1 percent in May. According to the study, there are currently 143,000 job opportunities, or 6.1 percent more than they were one year ago, in the social and healthcare services sectors. This is a significant rise from the 5.4 percent vacancy rate in April and a 20% vacancy rate in May 2021.

In May, there were 161,000 unfilled jobs in the food and hospitality services industry in both Manitoba and Nova Scotia. Both provinces have unemployment rates higher than 10 percent. The food and lodging industries offered the most jobs available in Nova Scotia and Manitoba for the 13th month in a row.

Job Openings Outnumber Unemployment

More than a million positions are available in Canada. Although it has increased by about 300,000 since May 2021, this is the same as the April data.

Based on the data from the May 2022 Labor Force Survey, a high vacancy rate and a low rate of unemployment indicate a growing labor shortage in a variety of industries and a rising demand for immigrants into Canada as the Canadian population gets older.

For the first time in history, Canada intends to welcome over 430,000 permanent residents in 2022. In 2024, the number will be more than 450,000.
