What Makes A Dog Ugly?

There is no best way to judge the adorableness of a dog. The appearance and the taste are not a given. However, certain traits are frequently mentioned when it comes to comparing those who are the “ugliest” dog breeds.

Here are some of the elements that could cause a dog to fall into the “ugly” category for some:

  • Overly Hairy Dog –Especially the fluffy breeds and those sporting fur coats that are corded (like the Hungarian Puli) have lots of hair that can cause it to be difficult to see the dog’s underside. Large coats are also more difficult to maintain neat, particularly if you have an active furry companion.
  • The Too Little Hair –Swinging in the opposite direction, some believe dogs like the Chinese crested might have too much hair. Hairless dogs often perform well in the World’s Most Ugly Dogs competition (more on this in the next section).
  • Underbites-A dental defect similar to an affenpinscher’s signature underbite can cause dogs to fall in the “ugly” category. Although that could be the case, my Spicy dog has an underbite, and I challenge you to prove that it’s not cute.
  • Smooshed faces –Brachycephalic breeds like pugs sport smaller faces, smushed-in, which certainly contributes to their unique look. Indeed, many pet owners consider this to be among the most attractive characteristics of their breed.
  • Unusual face or body Structure: There’s no size that’s perfect for every case when it comes to choosing an appropriate dog. However, certain breeds stand in more strongly than others. Breeds such as the Bedington and the bull terrier could get “ugly” points from their unique body shape.
  • Excessive Skin-Some observe that dogs with excessive skin appear to have a unique appearance. The Chinese Shar-pei is a great illustration of this.
